We were careless

Reprinted and expanded from https://takenote347.wordpress.com/2022/11/19/concerning-us/

We were careless of each other
We let our attention slip, taking
For granted there would always
Be an us, constants in our world
We were careless of each other
Letting the us slip, sure that we
Could forget and not be forgotten
That we could wander and be
Welcomed back, certain there
Would be no change in the winds
To take us off course, careless

Sure that no button would pop
Certain there would be no change
In the winds to take us off course
We were careless of each other
Sure that we could forget and not
Be forgotten; that we could wander
And be welcomed back Certain
That nothing would ever change
We were the constants in our world
Taken for granted one of the other

Careless but at ease expecting that
No thread could unravel Sure that
The sails would hold against all
Adverse weather Sure the compass
Was true even if we did not pay
Attention to rocky shoals or ominous
Clouds Watching the buoys bobbing
In shallow waters or the waves in the
Deep we left the bridge certain no
Change would sink us or take us adrift

Pink horizon

We know that a red sky [at night]
Portends a clear day [at morning]
What, prithee, does a sky of pink
Foretell? Should we expect our
Day to show uncertainty rather
Than clarity? Erring [of course]
On the side of delighting sailors?
I tend to think [rather without
Evidence] that the pink is red
Shivering from the cold, made
Pale by temperatures too low
For comfort, too high for frost.
Pink sky at dusk, warm up the
Cabin, Captain [and if you must
Sail] wear long Johns and a parka.

Babel

Reposted from https://wp.me/s8jzUa-babel

Today, I envision a poem written

In a language I cannot speak

Or understand, so it may be just

So much nonsense, so much sound

Signifying little or less than the

Bard envisioned in a language he

Manipulated so grandly and eloquently

My poem is cacophony, rhythm and perhaps

Rhyme, but it is a language I cannot speak

It is a poem both glorious and misconstrued.

Where do I begin speaking in tongues?

Who will repeat my words, memorize my

Message when this project ends with a

Simple finis? Will it just be the end?

What if

What if
When we landed
Behind enemy lines
No-one seemed to notice

And when they finally saw us
They waved a mild hello
Fingers fluttering in greeting

What if

When we waged war
No-one engaged with us
But just shrugged and
Walked away, carrying
Bundles of wheat and stacks of corn to market

And when they passed us
Waved in salutation
Nodding as they went by

What if
We practiced the fighting
Alone on a field of battle
And when they saw us
Grunting and struggling with cannon and gun
They stood and watched
Gathering around us
Like a crowd of cheerleaders
Applauding our efforts as if for show
Waving a small flag
Not theirs but ours
In acknowledgement
